Are you connecting with your target audience on social media? One way to build better online relationships is through “storytelling” – sharing your brand’s or your business’ story.
Learn more about storytelling on social media in the Resource of the Week below.
Each week, I share helpful resources across my social profiles to help small business owners and solopreneurs keep up with social media marketing, and optimize it for their business. What you’ll find in this weekly blog post:

Creating Fans Through Storytelling | Mack Collier
Storytelling in this article is a way to share day-to-day events so your audience knows more about you and your business, versus making up fictional tales.
This strategy is:
“…telling stories that relate to the brand, but that also tie into themes that are important to the customer.”
“…pulling back the curtain and giving us a ‘backstage pass’ to see what
goes on within the brand.”
So, you’re sharing more about who you are, what you do, what your business/brand purpose is, which makes people connect with you on a human-to-human level.
Another helpful resource is from Gary Vaynercheck, where he explains his “document, don’t create” strategy:
Document, Don’t Create: Creating Content that Builds your Personal Brand
As he explains:
“It’s just a version of creating that is predicated more on practicality
instead of having to think of stories or fantasy—something that’s very
hard for most people (including myself).”
“Documenting your journey versus creating an image of yourself is the
difference between saying “You should…” versus “my intuition says…”.”
I like to think of it as documenting the daily/weekly goings-on in your business or personal brand to create the stories you share on social media.
And I’ll admit it can be easier said than done, as I personally need to step this up for my personal brand and our business’ stories.
Here are a few tips for you:
- Keep a running log of what you’re currently working on, client problems
you’ve solved, and challenges you/your customers faced. - Use or create themes on your social accounts:
#ThrowbackThursday (or #TBT) is an easy one to share your business or brand history, while #MondayMotivation #MotivationMonday can be tied into what motivates you and your customers during challenges. - Create your own theme:
I created the hashtag #socialmediaLCSourStory when I shared a different post on Instagram (our account name is SocialMediaLCS) each Thursday in September, which was our company’s anniversary month.
A tip about using hashtags: Just be sure to research any hashtags you create for your brand before using them, in case they’re being used for other content that would have a negative impact on your posts.
