Move Your Business Forward By Taking Action

Move your business forward by taking action

Are you struggling to get things done in your business? Here is a motivating quote for you:

“Thought is action in rehearsal.”
~ Sigmund Freud

You can apply this quote to your life in several different ways; but for me, it provides insight on taking action instead of getting stuck by overthinking things.

As small business owners, we need to recognize that great thoughts and ideas don’t do us much good if we don’t act upon them.

Do you consider yourself more of a “thinker” or a “doer”? I’m definitely more of a thinker. It’s one of my bad habits: overthinking things and making situations (and life) more complicated than they need to be at times.

As a small business owner, you need to find a balance between being a thinker and a doer:

You’ve got to take the time to think about the big decisions and goals in your business.

But all the planning and dreaming in the world won’t make your business a success…you also need to act on the plans and the dreams.

So this quote puts a little perspective on the thinking and the doing: if we consider our thoughts as the rehearsal, and take real action soon after (or after we’ve got the details sorted), we can be both a thinker and a doer in our business.

Here’s a suggestion: make a Thoughts and Actions List.

1. What are 5-10 thoughts (or goals/plans) for your business over the next 6 months?  Write them down.

2. Next to each thought, list one or more actions necessary to make the thought become a reality. Don’t list too many actions; keep it simple.

3. Break each action down into smaller steps if necessary.

4. Post your Thoughts and Actions List somewhere you can see it every day for a positive, results-oriented reminder of how to move your business forward.

Both the thinking and the doing are important for your small business.

Like most things in life, the trick is to find a balance between the two, so that your thoughts motivate you to take the necessary action to move forward.
