Thoughts of the Week:
Should you start using “Stories” in your social media marketing strategy?
Stories are also referred to as ephemeral content: posts that disappear within a certain time frame after publishing. Brands are using this type of content in a variety of ways, but for the small business owner or entrepreneur, a main function of this tool is storytelling.
Snapchat – Messenger Day – Instagram Stories – Facebook Stories… are all examples of this type of content.
These daily “stories” are a way to give your audience a glimpse behind the scenes or to provide a shortcut in the know-like-trust formula as you communicate with other users in a more personal way.
Should you use this type of content in your social media strategy? Here are 3 things to consider as this trend continues:
(1) Start with your target audience. Where are they? Does it make sense to use all of these Story applications – Snapchat, Instagram Stories, Facebook Stories, Messenger Day? Or just one? Or maybe none right now?
(2) Next is you. What do you have time to do? What are your available resources? What can you outsource? For example, if you think your target audience will respond to this ephemeral (or disappearing) content, can you outsource some of your other social media tasks to make room for creating your daily Snaps or Stories?
(3) Now you can plan. This type of content may appear to be spontaneous, but it should be created with a purpose to fit into your overall digital marketing strategy. There are quite a few Apps and tools that now allow you to create content (images) that are the optimal dimensions for a Story, which saves time.
